This website provides a concise but very interesting history of the English language. This would be a handy site to refer to when introducing Chaucer, Beowulf, and other medieval texts. A brief audioclip is provided so that students can hear what Old English sounded like. The links offer many opportunities for individual students to go on "word origin" sources, to dialog with others about words, and for the teacher to make additional assignments. The bibliography and other links section is very good.
